Challenging times: the Marcegaglia response
The CEO Antonio Marcegaglia has illustrated the group strategy in response to the challenging times that lie ahead.
According to his vision, the two-year period 2010-2012 can be considered ad "the Age of Confusion" mainly characterized by the harsh battle for (poor) value.
While for 2013-2020 the situation will evolve into an "Age of Normality" that will be marked out by a more balanced split in the value chain.
In the current "Age of Confusion", some new patterns emerged in the steel industry: unbalanced distribution in the steel value chain, very high competition in the downstream and others such as: an increased regionalisation and a decrease of international trade.
Marcegaglia strategic response to the situation is mainly based on an aggressive pursuing of a courageous strategy of further growth, based on:
- a significant investment plan both domestically and abroad,
- growing international presence (especially in tubes),
- the empowering of the most efficient Italian sites (Ravenna, Gazoldo, Casalmaggiore) through economy of scale and flexibility,
- further enhancement of the product range, especially on high end/value added products.
aiming to further enhance its leading positions both in Europe and internationally as a global player in the tube sector, concluded the CEO Antonio Marcegaglia.

Slitting excellence
Before 2007, Marcegaglia strip division had been mostly concentrated
on the Italian market (95%) due to capacity constraints that limited export business to spot opportunities.
Then Marcegaglia launched its latest investment plan, and once
again Marcegaglia Ravenna was upgraded, becoming the group largest plant for flat steel processing.
Within this new perspective, the strip division - as highlighted by its sales manager Lorenzo Biagi - is now selling only 65% of volumes to the domestic market, exporting the remaining 35%. A quota that is constantly increasing, aiming to reach a proportion of 50-50 by 2013.

Emerging markets
In the Americas, Marcegaglia has a presence both in the North - with Marcegaglia USA - and in South - with Marcegaglia do Brasil.
As illustrated by Luiz Daury, commercial director of the Brazilian branch, Marcegaglia has consolidated its presence at a national level, being among the top ten independent steel processing companies - with a gross turnover of 513 million Reais.
New dimensions, new coatings in carbon steel tubes
Tube production has always been the core business of Marcegaglia.
In more than 50 years of history, the group have continued to expand
in new ranges, new dimensions, new qualities and new coatings.
Marcegaglia carbon steel tube production today is spread worldwide,
with 12 plants in Italy and 5 abroad, equipped with a total of 150 production lines.
One of the group main feature has always been the extremely high diversification in tube products - from commodity and construction,
to precision and automotive tubes, down to refrigeration tubes.
This has kept Marcegaglia relatively safe from the ups and downs
of markets, as illustrated by Cristiano Rocchi, export sales manager
of Marcegaglia tube division.
On the other side, Julie Ingram - sales manager of Marcegaglia UK -
has drawn the attention on the latest product engineered by the Dudley: Marce-coat, a new coated tube capable of resisting to many forms
of corrosion.
This new product has four main peculiar features:
superior corrosion protection, completely clean tube, suitability
for direct painting/powder coating or raw as finished coated product,
with aesthetically pleasing appearance.

Hi-tech China
More than 50 participants have attended the speech dedicated to China
that has inaugurated the workshop program of Marcegaglia at Tube 2012 (stand 3D30).
Luciano Giol, general manager of the Chinese plant, has illustrated
how the Italy-based group is facing that market and its unique
peculiarities - considering that, although China has lowered
its GDP growth forecast for 2012, Italian high value added business
such as Marcegaglia are in a strong position to capitalize
on China's shift to internal private consumption.
h.14,00
East meets West
Bern Estermann, commercial director of Marcegaglia Kluczbork,
has focused its speech on the Polish plant production, presenting not only
its technological features and product range, but also drawing the attention on a key characteristic of the plant compared with the local market situation: a large warehouse area, that allows the plant to serve as the main logistics hub for the complete range of Marcegaglia tubes and flats for the Central, Eastern and Northern European markets.
h.15,30
10 years of innovation and technology
Marcegaglia coil processing capacity has been developed
through the years, mainly within the huge complex in the harbor
of Ravenna, on the Adriatic Sea.
Enrico Paladini, director of Marcegaglia coil division, has illustrated
the group's worldwide production of flats focusing on these topics,
concluding with a comment on how the short and long-term outlook
will influence EU mills and the distribution sectors.
