The Green Economy Festival kicked off yesterday in Parma, promoted by ItalyPost in partnership with L’Economia of Corriere della Sera.

Hosted in the park surrounding Crédit Agricole Italia’s offices, the event brought together entrepreneurs, institutional leaders, researchers and students to explore the key challenges of the transition, ranging from innovation and the circular economy to decarbonization and sustainable growth.

Among the day’s highlights was Antonio Marcegaglia, who – following an address by Crédit Agricole Italia CEO Hugues Brasseur – closed the event with an interview led by Nicola Saldutti.

Discussions focused on the state of the steel industry, the need to balance sustainability with competitiveness and the determination of entrepreneurs who continue to invest — something clearly reflected, in our case, in the Marcegaglia Fos-sur-Mer industrial project.

Today marks the departure from Gazoldo degli Ippoliti of our first fully electrified international road shipment.

Approximately 30% of the total materials we handle already travel by rail. This initiative represents a further step forward in our decarbonization journey, aiming to reduce emissions also in road transport, one of the most challenging sectors.

The testing phase required a thorough feasibility study, necessary to balance:

• delivery times
• customer requirements
• availability of the charging infrastructure
• vehicle range, which is still limited over long distances

The project was developed in collaboration with Space Logistic, which provided a fully electric Mercedes-Benz Trucks vehicle. The shipment is destined for a major German customer in the Group’s tube division.

The objective is to demonstrate that electric transport is already a viable solution for medium- to long-haul routes, capable of ensuring operational efficiency levels comparable to traditional transport. Thanks to smart planning, charging stops are integrated into mandatory driving breaks, optimizing overall transit times without significant impact on operations. Most importantly, the process is fully sustainable: using an electric vehicle instead of a diesel-powered one eliminates CO₂ emissions, compared to approximately 800 kg of CO₂ that would have been generated by conventional transport.

A concrete step towards low-emission logistics.

The international analysis firm examined the financial statements and sustainability reports of over 5,000 companies, assessing three key areas: Environmental (waste, emissions, energy, water), Social (diversity, training, safety), and Governance (transparency, stability, growth).

AdriatiCO₂: a major step toward a more sustainable future

Marcegaglia is at the forefront of the fight against climate change with AdriatiCO₂, an innovative project selected by the EU Environment and Climate program to significantly reduce CO₂ emissions at the Ravenna plant, the largest in our Group.

The goal is to capture and store 95% of the emissions produced by the Ravenna cogeneration plant, utilizing cutting-edge technologies and a strategic collaboration with Eni and Snam.

“A concrete infrastructure to reduce the environmental impact of the steel industry, create new opportunities for the territory, and contribute to a greener Europe. A bold project that combines technology and vision,” commented Aldo Fiorini, who spoke at the siderweb Arena talk alongside Petrosino Mario, Operational Director of the Ravenna Port Authority; Luca Rossi, Head of CSE U.S. Opportunities Identification at ENI; and Alessio Gambato, Business Development Manager, Decarbonization Unit at Snam.

CDP assigns “A-” rating to Marcegaglia

CDP (Carbon Disclosure Project) has awarded Marcegaglia an “A-” rating in the “Climate Change” and “Water Security” programs.

CDP is an international non-profit organization that provides businesses, governments, and investors with a global system for measuring and reporting environmental impact. In particular, it offers a method to recognize the positive and effective actions that organizations undertake to mitigate risks related to climate change, water issues, and deforestation.

Currently, it collaborates with over 7,000 businesses, 630 cities, and 120 subnational regions and states worldwide, providing them with an effective tool for accountability, support, and dialogue among different sectors.

This is another important recognition that rewards our commitment to responsible steelmaking.

EIB provides €100 million for Marcegaglia’s decarbonisation and innovation strategy

Today the European Investment Bank (EIB) has announced €100 million in financing for Marcegaglia, the Mantua-based steel group. This operation will support the group’s €170 million investment plan. The operation was finalised this morning at the group’s historic headquarters in Gazoldo degli Ippoliti, as the loan was signed by heads of the family business Antonio Marcegaglia and Emma Marcegaglia and EIB Vice-President Gelsomina Vigliotti.

The operation is to be completed by 2028 and will help to further digitalise and automate logistics at the plants in Ravenna and Gazoldo degli Ippoliti. The aim is to further decarbonise one of the galvanising lines in Ravenna, and to develop innovative, low-carbon and highly energy-efficient technology for electrical steels. In addition, finance will be provided for research, development and innovation projects, particularly those involving production processes at the Ravenna, Gazoldo degli Ippoliti and San Giorgio di Nogaro plants.

By providing this finance, the EIB is highlighting its commitment to supporting projects that promote innovation, sustainability and economic growth in Europe. Working with Marcegaglia is an important step towards a more sustainable and competitive future for the European steel industry as a whole. “The steel industry is crucial for the economy and the competitiveness of the European Union, but as we know, producing steel requires a large amount of energy and has a significant environmental impact. The financing announced today will help Marcegaglia embark on a transformational journey, enabling the group to adopt more sustainable industrial processes and cutting-edge technologies to improve its environmental footprint, increase safety at work and reduce costs. The transition towards innovative and sustainable production processes and clean technologies is essential to further Europe’s competitiveness and its leading role in new technologies, as well as to achieve EU climate neutrality objectives by 2050,” said EIB Vice-President Gelsomina Vigliotti.

“The loan we signed today is another example of the positive working relationship that we have enjoyed with the EIB since 2019, and also demonstrates our unwavering and firm commitment to keeping our plants up to date with state-of-the-art technology. The aim of our important investment plan – that will take us to 2028 and receive EIB support – is not only to make our plants more innovative, but also to decarbonise them and improve energy efficiency, always with greater financial and environmental sustainability in mind. These projects will help to further reduce our environmental impact and improve the technology we use. This will hopefully place us among the very best in the European steel industry,” said Antonio and Emma Marcegaglia.

This EIB financing will cover more than the usual 50% of the total project cost, given it is supporting the REPowerEU objectives. For projects such as these, the EIB can offer higher initial disbursements and longer maturities to make loans even more attractive to the energy sector, and also increase the co-financing ceiling to 75%. The EIB is committed to supporting REPowerEU, making €45 billion in additional financing available by 2027.

As of today, Marcegaglia is officially a Founding Member of the UN Global Compact Network Italy, an organization established in June 2013 to promote the 10 principles of the UN Global Compact at the national level and committed to supporting the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Along with 90 other organizations, with this new status, Marcegaglia will be able to contribute to the governance of the Italian network of the United Nations Global Compact.

Marcegaglia Buildtech marks an important milestone on sustainability: our entire product range has achieved the Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) certification.

The certification confirms that all Marcegaglia Buildtech products meet rigorous standards, thus contributing to the reduction of environmental impact.

Following the certification of road barriers and sandwich panels, our scaffolding and construction components have also achieved EPD certification.

This result highlights the importance the company places on sustainability, reflecting a forward-looking vision and a commitment to green innovation.
