Sheffield and stainless steel

In January 2023, Marcegaglia Group acquired an electric furnace steel mill for stainless steel in Sheffield, UK, where a wire rod rolling plant and a bar production plant are also located. These are joined by a bar production plant in Richburg (USA); a wire rod hot rolling plant and a drawn wire production plant in Fagersta (Sweden).

For the first time in its history, therefore, the company has invested in primary steel production, in a strategic operation with strong symbolic value: in 1913, in fact, stainless steel was born and developed in Sheffield.

In this way, Marcegaglia has achieved partial integration upstream in the value chain, with a view to shortening and stabilizing supply chains, developing an increasingly sustainable and competitive product offering.

This is the largest acquisition transaction made by the group, crowning the dream of founder Steno Marcegaglia, who aspired to invest in primary steel production.
