Revamping and cogeneration plants: Marcegaglia’s investments for productivity and environmental sustainability
Marcegaglia continues its commitment to enforce important technical improvements and technological innovations in order to enhance the group’s productivity while maintaining a strong focus on environmental sustainability.
This is testified by the new project, in partnership with Danieli, to revamp the furnace of one of the four galvanizing lines of the Ravenna plant, increasing the production of hot rolled products up to 160 tons per hour. The intervention consists in updating the combustion system, with a consequent reduction of pollutant emissions (NOx) and specific fuel consumption. At the same time, the use of more efficient electric motors under different operating conditions reduces the electrical consumption of the cooling tower equipment.
Meanwhile, work continues on the construction of two cogeneration plants in Ravenna and Gazoldo degli Ippoliti dedicated to the production of electricity, steam and hot water. For its high-efficiency combined heat and power plants, Marcegaglia chose the Wärtsilä 31SG natural gas engine technology, which guarantees particularly clean combustion and extends maintenance intervals. This makes it possible to replace the boilers that currently provide the heat required by the plants, thus contributing to the reduction of CO2 emissions.
Through the energy operator Engie Italia, Marcegaglia will be able to produce 35.2 megawatts on its own to supply the Ravenna plant and 21.4 megawatts for the Gazoldo degli Ippoliti plant.
All these projects are scheduled for delivery at the beginning of 2021 and are the result of the group’s constant commitment to pursue a business development that is also sustainable.
